Phoning Home
You can phone from the Telephone Centres or many of the change bureaux. In both cases you make the call from a booth and are charged at the end of your call. Alternately you can use any of the payphones around town. You need to insert 1,50 euros to make connection with the UK, and have plenty of change at hand. Before inserting your 1,50 euros, you are recommended to insert a small coin and if this registers, then insert the 1,50 euros. You will then be credited with the full amount and you will be aware that the phone is functioning properly. You can purchase a phone card from a tobacconist shop, post office or any other outlet where you see the Telef—nica phonecard sign. They are used in the same way as you use them at home. To phone the UK, dial 0044 then the number you are calling but omitting the first 0. For example, if you were calling 0151-489-3455, from here it would be 0044 151-489-3455. To phone Ireland dial 00353 followed by the number you are calling. If you are phoning to a mobile phone on the island you simply dial the complete number but need a minimum of 1 euro to get connected. All mobile phone numbers begin with the digit '6'. If a number begins with 971 it is a local Mallorcan landline call. To make a reverse charge to Britain via a British operator dial 900 99 00 44, for a free call to British Telecom. Phone between 10pm and 8am, or on Sundays ... it's cheaper |
